ITF demands reinstatement of Pakistani airline flight engineers
3 April 2008
The ITF has called on the Pakistani government to reinstate 80 flight engineers who are reported to have been illegally dismissed by Pakistan’s flag carrier airline. The dismissals flout the spirit of a recent government decision to lift the ban on trade union activities.
In a letter dated 1 April to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousaf Raza Gillani, who took office last month, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft outlined the case of the 80 flight engineers, who had been permanent employees of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Their plight was first highlighted by the ITF-affiliated Flight Engineers National Association, which claimed that the engineers had been illegally dismissed, after the company ignored a Sindhi high court ruling, instructing the company to rescind its order to terminate the workers’ jobs.
Cockroft stated: “I believe this continuing situation with the PIA management flouting the judiciary ruling and its denial of trade union rights and representation regarding collective bargaining, can only undermine our affiliate’s confidence and hopes in the new wind of change, so clearly stated by your good self with the lifting of the ban on trade union activities.”
He also called for government intervention to ensure that the flight engineers are re-admitted back onto the payroll and that the company engages with the union in meaningful negotiations on the future of the flight engineering sector.
Today, 3 April, an ITF-affiliated Pakistani port union, the Karachi Port Trust Labour Union, is organising a rally not only to congratulate the government on lifting the trade union ban and abolishing anti-labour laws, but also to add its voice to the campaign to reinstate the 80 PIA flight engineers.
