US workers to march for well-paid jobs
2 Abril 2008
Transport workers in the US will be among those marching across Los Angeles in the US in April to fight for well-paid jobs and good working conditions as more than 350,000 workers are set to renegotiate their contracts this year.
From 15 – 17 April, workers, including those represented by the ITF-affiliated International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, will march some 28 miles from Hollywood to the docks of San Pedro. They will be joined by community supporters and will camp out overnight along the route. The march will end in a rally at the Port of Los Angeles on 17 April. Teamsters President Jim Hoffa is expected to speak at the event.
In the run-up to elect a new Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which makes crucial decisions on workers’ pensions, wages and healthcare, the marchers will be calling on the electorate to vote for a candidate that best represents workers’ interests.
The ILWU, which is currently in negotiations with the Pacific Maritime Association over a new contract for members, is making a number of demands including: well-paid jobs that are able to support working families, safer jobs with fewer injuries and fatalities and protection of health and retirement benefits. The current contract is due to expire on 1 July this year.
ILWU members are also planning to hold “stop-work” meetings on 1 May at ports in California, Oregon and Washington in protest against the Iraq war and calling for the immediate safe return of US troops.
