Nepali union organisations unite

The Nepalese trade union movement is set to become stronger after two trade union organisations were united last week.
The Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) and the Democratic Confederation of Nepalese Trade Unions (Decont) were unified during an official ceremony in Kathmandu on 2 March. Guest of honour at the event was Nepal’s Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, a founding President of the NTUC. Others attending the convention included: Guy Ryder, International Trade Union Confederation General Secretary; Noriyuki Suzuki General Secretary, ITUC Asia Pacific; Paung Ahn of the International Labour Organization’s Delhi office, as well as representatives from trade unions, such as the Japanese confederation, JTUC-Rengok.
At the event, it was announced that former President of the NTUC, Laxman Basnet, would lead the united organisation as President, with Khila Nath Dahal, previously acting President of Decont, as Deputy-President. During the ceremony, they signed a unification agreement for the new organisation, which is to be known as the Nepal Trade Union Congress-Independent.
Ajay Rai, President of the ITF-affiliated transport union Nepal Yatayat Mazdoor Sangh, said: “This unification will help to better represent workers. Nepal is now well-placed to create a unified voice for workers and offer a good example at a global level.”
Mahendra Sharma, ITF Deputy Asia-Pacific Regional Secretary, commented: “Negotiations are currently taking place between the transport sections of the former NTUC and Decont and we hope that unification at industrial level will follow; the ITF will be working to foster this process.”
