Union wins deal for Russian railway workers
1 February 2008
Russian railway workers are this year to benefit from an expansion in their existing social rights and enhanced pay levels, thanks to a new three-year deal.
The 2008-2010 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the joint stock company, Russian Railways, and the ITF-affiliated Trade Union of Railwaymen and Transport Construction Workers of Russia, was signed last month. The agreement not only maintains all existing rights but builds on them, providing workers with a wide range of benefits, including: steps to ensure that wage increases are competitive; lump sum rewards for those who retire; free tickets for suburban and long-haul train journeys; and additional annual leave and related welfare benefits. Funding for improvements in working conditions and safety three times the amount recommended by the labour code of the Russian Federation will also be provided as well as free medical assistance for workers at company medical facilities, discounts for employees’ household fuel, company nursery schools for workers’ children and compensation for air travel costs for certain workers.
Mikhail Lyakhov ITF Moscow office commented: "Our national railway system is now entering its third stage of reform. Our labour legislation was also recently amended. Nevertheless, the union succeeded in concluding a new CBA for a longer period and bringing better conditions. It testifies to the strength of the union and its increasing influence on the employers within the framework of social partnership".
