Champion of new DHL union in Greece vows to challenge dismissal

An employee, sacked for her role in establishing a new trade union in Greece to represent workers at global delivery company DHL, has pledged she will fight to be reinstated.
Ekaterina Apostolopoulou was among six employees who initiated the creation of the Union of DHL Greece Employees, which was registered in the Greek courts on 19 November. She was sacked after she and her colleagues began to collect signatures to endorse the union. Her dismissal was the culmination of intimidation and pressure tactics from management experienced by all six activists. Apostolopoulou has vowed to take the matter to court in a bid to be reinstated. Meanwhile the ITF and ETF have committed to support her efforts, back the union’s start-up activities and help build relations with management.
The union which represents 118 employees working for DHL Express (Hellas) was established following an initiative dating back to July. Peter Luypaert, Belgian trade unionist and European Works’ Council delegate, played an instrumental role in pushing the union recognition process ahead.
