A Turkish civil aviation union has set up an online campaign to protest against government proposals that will cut benefits for cabin crew.

The ITF-affiliated union, Hava-Is launched the campaign on 28 November to oppose the government’s draft bill, which aims to reform the social security system. If implemented, the proposals would cut benefits to cover specific occupational hazards, which are awarded to workers in certain professions, including cabin crew.

The union’s online campaign aims to press the government to redraft the law so that the rights of flight crew are protected. Workers, including pilots and crew members across Turkey regardless of whether or not they are a union member, are being urged to send a protest letter to the Minister of Labour via the union’s website.

Mustafa Yagci, General Secretary of Hava-Is, commented: “Our online campaign is only the beginning of our members’ fight to protect their rights. We also oppose the entire social security reforms, which the Interntational Monetary Fund and the World Bank are dictating, and we will take part in organising national protests with other unions.”
