International union delegation puts pressure on US airline

4 October 2007

ITF civil aviation unions from around the world descended on Atlanta, US, on Monday to help boost the organising efforts of two fellow ITF-affiliated unions at a major US airline.

The unions along with ITF representatives were in the city for a meeting of labour organisations representing workers employed by airlines in the Skyteam alliance.

They participated in a rally to show solidarity for the Association of Flight Attendants and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The unions are currently attempting to organise all staff working at Delta Airlines, which is also a member of the Skyteam alliance. Currently only pilots at the airline are unionised.

Speaking at the event, ITF Civil Aviation Secretary Ingo Marowsky, brought “global greetings” from Skyteam unions. He also emphasised the need for workers to feel a sense of pride in their profession and stressed the importance of respecting all workers’ right to be part of a union.

Later he added: “There was a good turnout at the event and the presence of international guests provided a refreshing new angle to the unions’ campaigns.”
