Civil aviation unions are to take to the streets of the city of Atlanta, US, next week in an effort to give a major airline’s workers a voice.
Trade unionists and ITF representatives are converging in Atlanta on Monday for a meeting of labour organisations representing workers employed by airlines in the Skyteam alliance. They will also stage a rally to help boost the organising campaigns of the Association of Flight Attendants and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; they are targeting Delta Airlines staff where only pilots are currently unionised. Delta Airlines is a member of the Skyteam alliance.
In recent years staff at the airline have suffered as a result of staggering wage cuts and a decline in their working conditions, including understaffing.
ITF Civil Aviation Secretary Ingo Marowsky commented: "We are expecting a significant turnout. We need to expose management’s ill will towards staff and to demand they treat workers fairly and enable them to express their collective voice through union representation."
