Unions grapple with global organising challenge
13 September 2007
Transport union activists from around the world last week turned the spotlight on their own activities in a bid to get to grips with a global agenda.
Some 40 delegates attended the ITF’s summer school in the Dutch town, Elspeet, between 3 and 7 September, which was hosted by the Dutch ITF affiliate FNV Bondgenoten. The seminar saw participants, representing 26 countries – from Austria and Bulgaria to Brazil and the Ivory Coast – tackle a range of issues around the ITF’s organising globally challenge. These included building their capacity to respond to the increasing integration of transport modes through logistics and the changing working environment.
During role-play workshops, participants examined ways of organising new categories of workers. Delegates were also able to witness key developments in the industry first-hand while on a visit to Rotterdam port, a key logistics hub.
The unions concluded that a range of capacity building measures needed to be taken. These included the need for strategic research, financial planning, youth development programmes and information on using technology.
“The summer school helped build my knowledge about how to organise and build union power. This is very important if we are to make our union strong,” said one delegate.
Summing up the event, Alana Dave, ITF Education Officer, commented: "This summer school demonstrated the critical role that education needs to play in building the capacity and skills of unions to carry out effective organising. Participants committed themselves to strengthening education in their own unions in order to build an active membership effectively.”
