Follow-up mission to Guatemala to press for progress in Zamora case

An international union delegation will travel to Guatemala to challenge the authorities’ handling of the investigation into the death of dockers’ union leader Pedro Zamora.
Led by the ITF and the International Trade Union Confederation, the mission will take place from 23 – 27 July. It aims to question the authorities regarding the case of Zamora, General Secretary of the ITF’s affiliate Sindicato de Trabajadores Empresa Portuaria – Quetzal (STEPQ). He was gunned down in January. It is believed his murder was directly linked to the union’s protests against plans to privatise the port.
Almost six months on, there has still been no news of progress in the investigation, despite worldwide protests. These include a joint resolution in the European Parliament denouncing human rights abuses in Guatemala, among them the murder of Zamora.
The group will visit the STEPQ, members of the Guatemalan justice, legal and political system, foreign embassies and promoters of human rights. A range of key participants who have provided prominent support for the campaign to secure justice for Zamora, have been invited to participate in the delegation.
The visit will follow up the mission that took place at the end of January when international trade unionists travelled to Guatemala to press the government to arrest those responsible for Zamora’s death.
