ITF homes in on “Organising Globally”

The ITF’s Organising Globally programme is to take centre stage in all federation activities, following key decisions taken by the ITF Executive Board recently.
The newly elected board held its first meeting since the federation’s Congress in Durban, South Africa, on 26 and 27 April. Chaired by ITF President Randall Howard and held in London, UK, it looked at ways of implementing the Organising Globally programme, which was adopted by Congress.
The board agreed that the programme would feature as a standing item on the agenda of every ITF section and regional meeting. Existing work programmes would be reviewed to ensure they made the maximum contribution to strengthening affiliated unions’ capacity to organise. Affiliated unions would also receive an Organising Globally bulletin and be asked to schedule a discussion of a special “Delivering the strategy” document at a meeting of their governing bodies, reporting back the outcome to the ITF.
Meanwhile, one of the board’s two annual meetings, involving the chair of the ITF women’s committee, section chairs and other invited guests, would be devoted to political issues linked to the programme.
Other issues tackled by the board included concrete proposals to engage young people – these will be put to the board at its next meeting – and the need to focus on new ways of ensuring that atypical, informal workers are organised.
The board accepted an invitation from its new member, Muchtar Hili from Tunisia, to hold its next meeting in Tunis, the first ITF Executive Board meeting to be held in an Arab country.Related pages:
