US transport workers call for backing during May action day

12 April 2007

Transport workers in the US are calling on employees around the world to unite in the common struggle against the onslaught on transport workers’ jobs.

Members of the ITF-affiliated International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) are urging other transport affiliates to back their action day next month.

The event on 17 May, which will be using the slogan “Enough is enough”, will involve a rally in Washington, DC, US; the union is aiming to see a turnout of 100,000 representatives from trade unions, community allies and progressive organisations.

A key message will be that workers are not a priority in the US and that transport workers have been under assault for years as a result of ineffective management and anti-worker laws. Job losses as employment is outsourced, cuts in pension benefits and under-investment in the transport system are among the issues workers have been facing.

The ITF, which is supporting IAMAW’s call for international solidarity, will be represented at the main event in Washington DC.

Unions are being asked to back the action in a number of ways. These include sending as many participants to the rally on 17 May and presenting government ministers with a charter of demands during the same week as the action. Cabin crew on stopover are also being urged to join ground staff at destination airports in organised actions.

Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Secretary commented: “Transport workers around the world are suffering the same indignities as the US workers. That’s why the ITF is urging civil aviation and other transport affiliates to back this worldwide campaign.”
