Labour court calls on airline to negotiate with workers

A labour court has urged an Irish carrier to negotiate with employees over plans to cut costs rather than impose the measures unilaterally.
The ITF-affiliated Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU), along with other unions, took their case to an Irish labour court following attempts by Aer Lingus to force through new terms and conditions. SIPTU would have been forced to take strike action had the new terms and conditions been imposed.
Last week the court recommended that the carrier consult workers over cost-cutting initiatives as well as consider the creation of a joint forum at which workplace changes could be discussed. It also recommended that unions be consulted on plans to establish a base overseas.
Since the court’s recommendations, SIPTU representatives have met with Aer Lingus management to “flesh out” the issues in the labour court recommendation.
Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Secretary commented: “This is a crucial win for social dialogue. Hopefully it will set an important precedent, preventing managers from imposing terms and conditions on workers and making them sit down and negotiate.”
