International Women's Day 2007 gets off the ground
8 March 2007
Transport unions around the world are putting women centre stage as they mark International Women's Day today, under the campaign slogan "Rights for Women Mean Rights for All.'
This year's campaign focuses on dealing with workplace issues to secure better conditions for women transport workers.
Activities include a lobby by the Argentinian seafarers' union of local and national authorities, shipowners and other unions to promote women's participation and a discussion on women's rights; distribution of a charter for women's rights by an Australian union; and a media campaign by a Croatian seafarers' union aiming to sensitise employers, government and the public to the role of women in transport.
Meanwhile unions in the Democratic Republic of Congo are aiming to strengthen women's participation in trade unions by launching training and discussion workshops; and in India railway and dockers' union's activities include organising role play and debates with women and men to put forward demands to the government on women's rights. Women from a Jordanian aviation union are also meeting with their employer to discuss eliminating discrimination from company regulations.
ITF Women's Officer Sarah Finke commented: "Each of these activities will be strengthened by the fact that unions are acting in solidarity with their sisters and brothers worldwide. They will spread the message that improved conditions for women transport workers mean that everyone benefits."
