The ITF has condemned the murder of two more Guatemalan trade unionists, just a week since the return of a delegation from the country to demand justice for port union activist Pedro Zamora, who was killed on 15 January.
Walter Aníbal Ixcaquic Mendoza and Norma Sente de Ixcaquic, members of the Frente Nacional de Vendedores de Guatemala were murdered on 6 February. The ITF and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) have expressed outrage over these latest violations and are calling on the Guatemalan authorities to carry out an exhaustive investigation into the new crimes.
Two weeks ago a joint delegation of representatives from the ITF and the ITUC travelled to Guatemala to demand a proper investigation into the murder of Pedro Zamora, leader of the Sindicato de Trabajadores Empresa Portuaria – Quetzal. An official complaint was also lodged with the International Labour Organization.
In a letter to the President dated 16 February, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft stated: “The Government, the Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office must carry out an exhaustive investigation of these new murders, putting an end to the killing and bringing those responsible to justice”.
