European trade unions continue wave of Ryanair protests
24 October 2006
ITF aviation section secretary Ingo Marowsky delivered messages of solidarity from unions all over Europe to striking workers in Girona, Spain, on Monday.
Responding to Ryanair’s Michael O'Leary’s threat to pull out of several Spanish airports if actions continue, Marowsky said: "We have a clear message for you. Wherever you try to run and hide, we will be there. Listen, sit down with the unions and talk."
Girona airport’s cheering picket line especially welcomed messages from Italy, where a parallel dispute is going on, and Ireland, where unions are currently working on averting a hostile takeover of the national Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus.
National television witnessed Ryanair management’s pitiful attempts to minimise the strike impact – by not checking in luggage and by forcing travellers, including families with children, to re-pack suitcases into refuse bags before being allowed to board.
Strikes took place throughout Spain on Monday; ITF-affiliated union Comisiones Obreras has said that unless Ryanair responds, actions will continue every Monday until Christmas.
