Road transport women on red alert over health and safety

11 October 2006

Large numbers of women road transport workers are “very worried” about health and safety issues, a new ITF survey shows.

The initial results of an ongoing study by the ITF found that 43 per cent of respondents expressed the highest level of concern. Women were mostly alarmed about employers’ failure to deal with stress and violent attacks as well as poor sanitation.

Working hours were also a major worry. In Brazil for example, 36 per cent of women bus workers had a break of half an hour or less during their working day - which in most cases exceeded eight hours.

In India, women road transport workers demanded clean drinking water, clean toilets and trade union training to deal with safety issues.

Unions are twice as likely than employers to carry out health and safety assessments, provisional results indicated.

To date, 375 women in ten countries have answered the survey, which is available online in English, French, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese.

This month, the ITF is urging road transport women worldwide to add their input in conjunction with its Action Week on 9-15 October. To complete the survey, please go to:
