In an act of defiance against the Irish budget airline’s notorious anti-worker policy, Ryanair cabin crew, based in Italy, have joined a union and nominated their official employee representative.

The Italian union federation, FIT-CISL, which will represent the workers in Italian bases, announced the move to management at Rome’s Ciampino airport this week. FIT-CISL is now seeking recognition as the bargaining agent for Ryanair cabin crew based in Ciampino airport. The workers join numerous other Ryanair union bases across Europe.

Congratulating the union for this breakthrough, Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Secretary, commented: “This is a major step forward for Ryanair workers in Rome. We urge the company to get to grips with the issue of workers’ rights immediately. No airline has ever been hurt because of workers’ trade union membership. This includes low cost airlines such as EasyJet in Europe and Southwest Airlines in the US, which Ryanair is trying to emulate.”

Ryanair has today sent staff from the company’s base in Ireland to Rome, but has made no comment on the subject.
