In the Asia/Pacific region priority is given to organising the unorganised, promoting and conducting trade union education and strengthening the capacity of transport unions to deliver solidarity. Addressing HIV/AIDS issues is a region-wide priority as are gender and youth activities and participation in ITF activities at all levels.
The region is geographically the largest and in terms of number of transport workers organised by affiliates it is the second largest after Europe, with more than 1.1 million. ITF Asia/Pacific affiliates are represented in 30 countries, the most recently affiliated of which are in the Maldives and Tonga.
There are now three offices in the Asia/Pacific region - Delhi, Sydney and Tokyo. The Delhi Office has overall responsibility for the Asia/Pacific region as well as South Asia, Central Asia and South-East Asia sub-regions specifically. The Sydney Office is the base for South Pacific (including Timor-Leste) sub-regional activities. The Tokyo Office is the base for East Asian sub-regional activities. The Regional Secretary heads the Delhi Office supported by the Assistant Regional Secretary and a Deputy Regional Secretary is in charge of each of Sydney and Tokyo Offices.

We congratulate MUNZ (the Maritime Union of New Zealand) and all those who pushed for this reform." المزيد >>

Indian ferry disaster, ITF comment
Commenting on the disastrous ferry sinking on the River Brahmaputra, Nick Bramley, chair of the ITF inland navigation section and Nautilus International national secretary in Switzerland, said: “This disaster is sadly only the latest in a long series of ferry tragedies in Asia and Africa. Everything points to poor training, dangerous working practices, inadequate regulation and near non-existent enforcement as being the root causes for this and similar losses of life. We urge the establishment of modern standards of training and certification for crew members, of effective safety standards for vessels and their crews and of competent enforcement regimes both nationally and internationally.” المزيد >>
