Unionists urged to show solidarity with Dutch dockers
09/02/2012
The ITF and its European arm, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), is urging labour activists across Europe to support Dutch dockers in the port of Rotterdam who are in dispute with their employer.
The workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated FNV Bondgenoten, have been organising unannounced work stoppages in the port since 30 January. They are involved in a contract dispute with APMTR, which operates the terminal at Maasvlakte 1.
The union is demanding a wage increase of 1.5 per cent per year (three per cent over a two-year contract). Of the three per cent, they are suggesting that 0.5 per cent should pay for better pensions. APMTR is offering 2.5 per cent and is refusing to invest in pensions payments.
FNV Bondgenoten also wants an extra employer contribution to ensure that workers retiring at 65 do not lose out under new pensions rules and they would like to see the safety certificate initiative for ports “Safe work practices” put in place. Prompted by the building of a new terminal at Maasvlakte 2 the union is also demanding job and working conditions guarantees for workers in both old and new terminals. The company has so far refused on all fronts and has been threatening to withdraw the existing contract if they fail to sign a new agreement imposed by management.
Since industrial action started, Maersk Line, a major customer at the terminal, has been diverting vessels to other European ports. The ITF and the ETF are calling on affiliates that receive these vessels to handle them “with caution” and to take “whatever lawful action deemed necessary”.
