New contract for 7000 in-flight catering workers in the US

03/02/2012

A two-year battle for a fair contract has paid off for in-flight catering workers in the US after they won a new settlement.

Seven thousand LSG Sky Chefs workers across some 40 kitchens in the US, represented by the ITF-affiliated UniteHere union, overwhelmingly ratified the deal recently. Benefits include: an hourly pay increase of up to US$1.40 over the term of the agreement, bonuses of up to US$1000, two additional leave days and an improvement in medical benefits. The agreement also stipulates a shorter timetable for negotiations when the contract expires in 2015.

The victory came hard on the heels of a nationally coordinated effort, which saw the union provide hundreds of bargaining committee leaders with organising training. It also built a broad campaign that involved actions in over 20 US cities last summer. In addition, LSG Sky Chefs workers also ran countless public rallies, shop floor delegations and lobby days, culminating in a trip to Germany, where LSG Sky Chefs owner Lufthansa is based.

Backed by the ITF, the campaign took on an international focus when shop stewards from the UK based ITF-affiliate Unite, representing workers in LSG Sky Chefs at London’s Heathrow airport, organised solidarity action; they distributed information, spoke to members and displayed posters.

“It took a lot of time and a lot of effort to get to this point but I feel very proud of what we won in this contract,” says Antonio Reyes, a member of the bargaining committee from Dallas, Texas.

ITF civil aviation section secretary Gabriel Mocho added: “The ITF has been supporting the LSG Sky Chefs workers through a concerted solidarity campaign. We’re pleased that the union’s efforts combined with international solidarity have helped to bring about this positive result.”
