Rate of ratification of maritime labour conventions gains pace

11 marzo 2010

The welcome acceleration in the ratification of International Labour Organisation (ILO) maritime conventions since the start of the year should encourage maritime unions around the world to push their own countries to ratify the three recent conventions. They are ILO convention 185 on seafarers’ identity documents, the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and ILO convention 188 on work in fishing. Only ILO convention 185 is currently in force.

So far in 2010 Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Russian Federation have ratified convention 185, while Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain and Croatia have ratified the MLC. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first country to ratify convention 188.

ITF seafarers’ section secretary Jon Whitlow commented: “The ratification of ILO 185 by Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Russian Federation shows that this convention is still relevant. This should encourage other countries to do likewise. If we can maintain this momentum we can also expect the MLC and ILO 188 to enter into force in 2011."
