Baggage weight campaign action at UK airport

11/02/2010

European aviation workers will this week call on the travelling public at one of the UK’s major airports to “pack less” as part of a baggage weight campaign, launched last year.

The ETF event, which is set to take place on 12 February at London’s Heathrow airport, is being organised by the UK unions UNITE and the Heathrow Liaison Committee. Labour activists from European unions will join forces at the event to urge the public to limit their baggage weight to a maximum of 23 kilos. The objective of the campaign is to reduce the risk to baggage handlers of musculoskeletal injury.

The workers will be holding a stand at the airport’s terminal 3, where they will invite MPs and passengers to lift four suitcases weighing 15, 23, 32 and 40 kilos; this will enable them to see for themselves the stresses placed on those handling baggage. Leaflets and baggage labels will also highlight the aims of the campaign. Meanwhile, unionists at other European airports will hand out the same baggage labels to passengers on flights into Heathrow.

Francois Ballestero, ETF civil aviation political secretary, said: “This Europe-wide action aims to ensure that UK and other European Union regulators take notice of the issue of injuries suffered by workers who handle baggage and fulfil the role they have been tasked with – to ensure that the workplace is safe for all employees.”

Gabriel Mocho, ITF civil aviation section secretary added: “Following a decision of the ITF ground staff committee, the ITF will this year roll out the “pack less” campaign at a global level to protect all baggage handlers worldwide.”
