Delta ‘election interference’ accusation: ITF comment

3 Dezembro 2010

Commenting on the filing by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) of formal interference charges with the US National Mediation Board against Delta Air Lines management alleging unlawful conduct during the recent flight attendant representation election, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said:

“These are serious charges and we utterly support the stand the AFA-CWA has taken by making them.”

He continued: “The ITF condemns any hint of illegal interference by the company in union election processes and any attempt deliberately to prevent employees from joining a union. Instead, Delta should accept the right of their workers to be represented.”

Alleged management pressure on Delta Air Lines employees to vote against joining the AFA-CWA and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) has been reported to both unions.

The AFA-CWA has now filed formal interference charges, and accuses Delta management of having compromised the secrecy of the ballot by urging flight attendants to vote on company-controlled work computers that could track whether they clicked on the National Mediation Boards’s internet voting site. In addition, the union has received reports from hundreds of Delta/Northwest flight attendants alleging Delta used coercive and unfair methods to influence the results of the recent union election, including: anti-AFA literature; excessive supervisor surveillance: and repeated supervisor phone calls to flight attendants’ homes telling them to vote.

Patricia Friend, AFA-CWA International President, stated: “Delta management launched the largest anti-union campaign in history and spared no expense in attempting to destroy the collective bargaining rights that Northwest flight attendants have worked to maintain for over 60 years. We now call on the NMB to conduct an exhaustive investigation of these charges and hold Delta executives accountable for their actions.”

The AFA-CWA explained that if the National Mediation Board (NMB) finds sufficient evidence that election interference occurred, it can order a new election that will allow flight attendants to decide representation in a free and fair manner.  On November 3, the NMB counted 9,216 votes in favor of union representation for Delta flight attendants and 9,544 votes against.  The union added that almost half of the crewmembers do want a union – along with, perhaps, more who were scared to vote because of the heavy handed management campaign.
