Petition to defend subcontracted US warehouse workers

26 Janeiro 2012

The ITF is urging unions to sign a petition to show solidarity with colleagues working for subcontractors of one of the biggest employers in the US as they struggle for fair working conditions.

Warehouse workers employed by subcontractors of multinational retailer Walmart who unload goods as part of the company’s supply chain are reported in some cases to be earning less than the minimum wage and receiving no overtime pay or holiday or sick leave. Their contracts are also frequently with temporary labour agencies even if they have been working at the same facility for years.

Last September, when 70 workers at a warehouse in California attempted to defend their right to fair treatment by filing a lawsuit over the failure to meet the legal minimum wage requirements, they were reportedly threatened and harassed. They were subsequently told that they would lose their jobs on 24 February.

As transport trade unionists around the world work alongside warehouse workers, the ITF is asking affiliates to sign a petition demanding that Walmart put in place a responsible contractor policy, obliging those it does business with to observe certain standards to protect workers. This includes a living wage, benefits and a guarantee to respect workers' legal rights.

ITF organising globally coordinator Ingo Marowsky commented: “We are calling on the ITF family to show Walmart that workers in the global supply chain are watching their actions closely and they don't like what they see. Walmart has a responsibility to all its workers and that includes those that work for its subcontractors.”
