ITF unions break the silence on violence against women
25 Novembro 2011
Members of ITF unions are joining their colleagues in the global union federations and the ITUC today in speaking out and breaking the silence on violence against women, as part of the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
ITF unions across the globe are organising activities ranging from film screenings to rallies and seminars. Participating countries include Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chile, France, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Mauritius, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Peru, Puerto Rico, Russia, Togo and the UK. For more details see www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/affiliates-activities-2011.cfm. Photos can be viewed at www.flickr.com/photos/itf/sets/72157628144515709.
Alison McGarry, ITF women transport workers coordinator, commented: “Unions in the workplace are best placed to publicise and help tackle this issue. ITF affiliates have been reporting increasing levels of violence being used against women transport workers, exacerbated by the economic crisis.”
She continued: “Breaking the silence is the first step in confronting that violence. Coordinated union action by union sisters ands brothers through implementing collective bargaining agreements and union and workplace policies can protect workers. I applaud our ITF affiliates who take action every year to highlight the criminal abuse of women transport workers.”
