Aviation unions fight for rights in LAN
17 Dezembro 2009
The ITF and its aviation affiliates shared tactics at a LAN network meeting in Santiago last week. A total of 15 union organisations, representing more than 6000 workers from Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Peru came together. The meeting aimed to coordinate a response to LAN's anti-union practices.
"Our most important goal was to reach a consensus on how we work together to fight anti-union practices in LAN, which seem to exist in all the countries where they operate," said Dina Feller, project coordinator.
The project has been running for two years, and has already seen results. Last week, the first union of LAN workers was approved by the Minister of Labour of Ecuador. This is the first step towards recognition of the cabin crew union, which will be based in Guayaquil and led by (female) general secretary Ximena Lopez.
Unions in Peru, representing the previously unorganized workers, have been brought together into a federation. Chilean and Argentinean organisations have also increased membership.
LAN (formerly LAN Chile) has operated successfully within Latin America by establishing separate subsidiary companies in different countries, which operate under a corporate strategy. The main emphasis has been to avoid trade union recognition and CBAs.
Anti-union policies have ensured very low salaries and conditions in the countries where the company has resisted unionisation.
