“You are not alone” global delivery workers in Colombia told
12 Novembro 2009
A Colombian postal workers’ union has been reaching out to workers at one of the big four global delivery companies. The campaign is part of ITF/UNI DHL global action week, which is taking place from 9-13 November, to demand that DHL managers respect the rights of workers wherever they are based.
The Sindicato de Trabajadores Postales de Colombia (STPC) distributed flyers and postcards outside the main DHL Express building in Bogotá on 9 November as well as the DHL Global site. The unionists talked to the workers about their employment conditions, some of whom responded with requests for more information on the ITF/UNI global campaign and how unions improved working conditions; others seemed afraid to speak to the union representatives.
However, the STPC encouraged them to contact the union if they felt their rights were being violated.
An STPC representative said: “We are here on behalf of DHL workers. At this moment ITF/UNI affiliates and their members are engaged in activities throughout the world so that all DHL workers get to know their rights. They want you to know that you are not alone.”
“You can count on us and we are not alone because at global level UNI and the ITF make companies respect workers' rights - especially the rights of those working in multinational companies like DHL.”
Other activities during the week have included: a rally in Belgium during which speakers voiced their concerns about the company’s poor trade union rights record in many parts of the world and a panel discussion in Ethiopia on 12 November. A postcard campaign in Hong Kong was also among the actions - trade unionists sent postcards to Frank Appel, chief executive officer of Deutsche Post DHL, demanding respect and a global agreement to cover all the company’s workers; there is currently no DHL union in Hong Kong.
