Seafarers and Dockers Women’s Network

14 August 2009

On August 5, the Confederación Marítima de Chile - COMACH, ITF affiliate, has established the Seafarers and Dockers Women's Network with its affiliates.

The initiative for the creation of this network was to fight against the violation of labor rights, mainly for women workers in Seafarers and Dockers sectors.

The lack of rights for pregnancy, workplace violence, sexual harassment, and other violations, are some of the topics that will be discussed in the first seminar in September 2009.

Violations of labor rights who suffer most workers of these sectors, as the helplessness of the pregnant casual workers, violence at the workplace and sexual harassment are some of the problems that motivated the creation of this network.

These topics and others will be addressed in the first workshop of the Network, to be held in September 2009. Women workers, who participated in the creation of this important network, expressed their readiness to work to improve Labour conditions for women workers of these sectors.

Andrea Privatti, Women and Young’s integration policies responsible of ITF Americas commented: "This is an example of awareness and solidarity among the workers, regardless of gender or age. These initiatives promote union strength as an instrument of struggle in defense of the right to decent work for all.”
