On 3 August, Marcelo Ebrard, Major of Mexico City, Armando Quintero, Minister of Transport of Mexico City and Benito Bahena, General Secretary of Alianza de Tranviarios de México -ATM, have inaugurated the operations of “The Zero Emission Corridor” in Mexico City.

This corridor is an ecological project created by the Government of Mexico City and the operation will be carried out by members of ATM, ITF Affiliate.

The basic features of this project are the rearrangement of one of the main avenues of Mexico City, which has 36.6 kilometres, and the decrease of pollutant emissions.

Public Transport in this corridor will be exclusively operated by electric trolley buses, in the pursuit of increasing the confidence on the use of this type of transport which is safe, quiet and clean. It is estimated that this service will transport more than 4,000 passengers per hour.

Benito Bahena y Lomé, General Secretary of ATM, commented: “It is gratifying that Mexico City’s Major, is concerned about reducing the emissions in the City, and is defending a better public transport to improve the health of the citizens as well as to fight global warming,  “The Zero Emissions’ Corridor” is a clear move towards a greener, healthier and safer city. Trade Unions have to promote the implantation of more ecological corridors, we need to act now or we will compromise the future of the next generations”.
