New union federation gets off the ground in Peru

Aviation workers in Peru are set to benefit from a stronger more unified voice following the launch of a brand new labour organisation.
The Federación de Trabajadores Aeronáuticos del Perú (FEDATA-Perú), which was officially established on 13 July, represents unions working on behalf of the employees of two South American airlines, LAN Peru and TACA Peru. Cabin crew, mechanics, pilots, ground staff and dispatchers as well as air traffic controllers and other employees will be covered through the new federation.
The objectives of FEDATA-Perú, a democratic union organisation, are to educate, defend, lead and represent its affiliates – of which there are currently seven. It also aims to provide a strong platform from which to stand up for labour rights, social services and national productivity. In addition it plans to establish a dialogue with employers and government as well as to influence public opinion and contribute to policy decisions affecting its affiliates.
Lilian Saavedra, general secretary of the Sindicato de Tripulantes de Cabina de LAN Perú, was elected president of the federation.
Gabriel Mocho, ITF civil aviation section secretary, explained: "The unions affiliated to the new federation have been involved in the ITF’s 'Organising in LAN' project. During the project they discussed the possibility of forming a common organisation that could help them to be stronger. Now it is a fact."
Antonio Fritz, ITF Americas regional secretary, added: “The Latin American airline industry has been dogged by a history of anti-unionism particularly with the introduction of low cost airlines - TACA and LAN being among them. Unions have been attempting to reestablish themselves after they were destroyed by the Fujimori government and the neo-liberal policies of the 1990s. The only way for workers to improve their conditions is by showing a united front; through the joint approach of the new federation, the aviation unions will be able to exercise greater bargaining power when dealing with local airlines.”
