Economic Crisis hits Chilean Dockers

27 July 2009

Dockers of San Antonio, members of ITF affiliate’s Confederación Marítima de Chile -COMACH, have had meetings with the government after demonstrations took place in many ports of Chile, to oppose  the loss of jobs and the reduction of working hours that affects many Port Workers.

About 300 Dockers took the office of the Chilean Port Authority, demanding alternatives to fight against the crisis instead of dismissing workers or reducing working hours a decision that would have a terrible effect on income of about 1,500 workers.

The ITF expressed the support to the fight of Dockers, who met with representatives from the government. The labour ministry has now agreed to provide training courses to Port workers in order to counter arrest some of the unemployment created by the reduction of vessels due to the economic crisis.

Antonio Fritz, ITF Americas Regional Secretary, commented: “ The crisis has not been created by workers and they shouldn’t be the ones paying for its effects. Mechanisms should be analysed to reduce the negative impact on workers, avoiding massive lay offs or reduction of wages, that would deepen even more this financial crisis”
