ITF deplores killings and supports humanitarian efforts in Gaza

2 January 2009

The International Transport Workers’ Federation has joined the international trade union community in condemning the killing of innocent civilians and calling for an immediate cessation of violence as Israel continues its attacks inside Gaza in response to the launching of rockets by Hamas after the end of a six-month ceasefire.

“The ITF fully supports the International Trade Union Confederation’s statement, which has deplored this cycle of attack and reaction,” said David Cockroft, ITF General Secretary. “Innocent workers and families on both sides of the divide are suffering. In Gaza, a catastrophe looms as supplies dwindle and hospitals cannot cope. It is time for the violence to stop and for the borders to open to allow rapid humanitarian relief to be delivered to Gaza.”

Cockroft encouraged transport worker affiliates to support the Jordanian unions’ efforts -  as well as other Arab world unions -  to collect supplies for relief to the people of Gaza, which the ITF’s aviation affiliate is arranging to be delivered via Royal Jordanian planes.

Any ITF affiliate wishing to make a contribution towards this relief effort being channelled through the ITF Amman office, should contact the ITF for bank transfer details.
