Seatlle dock death proves need for safety campaign
The death of a docker in the Port of Seattle who was crushed between a forklift truck and a container proves the need for unceasing vigilance by dockers’ unions, Paddy Crumlin, ITF president and dockers’ section chair, has stated.
He said: “An investigation is under way into the accident, and if one thing is certain it is that its resulting lessons will be learnt by the ILWU and all of us in the ITF docker unions.  I’ve said it before: every death is one too many.  Every death is a failure of the accident prevention that we not just champion, but have to actively fight for every day. It’s a duty we willingly take on – and expect employers and the authorities to do the same.” more >>

Call for respect for labour rights in Ecuador in bid to back sacked airline workers
Global union federation representatives and members of the Confederation of the Americas (CSA) have signed a joint statement urging the government of Ecuador to ensure that private employers comply with freedom of association and collective bargaining conventions. The move is part of efforts to support members of the ITF-affiliated Sindicato de Trabajadores de Aerolane (SITA); it represents 89 per cent of the 80 workers, including 55 cabin crew, who were sacked by LAN Ecuador airline Aerolane on 25 January. more >>

Los sindicatos mundiales revelarán hoy un informe sobre la manera en que Deutsche Post DHL trata a sus trabajadores y trabajadoras en la reunión general anual de la empresa en Francfort. Publicarán un informe técnico titulado Irresponsabilidad Empresarial: Exponer las prácticas laborales de Deutsche Post DHL a nivel global, el cual expone un historial vergonzoso de elusión de los sindicatos fuera de Europa y el uso excesivo de trabajadores/as temporales y cedidos/as por empresas de trabajo temporal. Se está pidiendo encarecidamente a los accionistas que ayuden a poner en orden la multinacional de logística y garanticen el cumplimiento de normas estrictas en todas sus operaciones. more >>
