The ITF Seafarers’ Section Steering Committee being informed that SINDMAR has been forced to start an industrial action on the offshore industry in Brazil, which has started last Monday, onboard the vessels operated by SEACOR Offshore do Brasil, a subsidiary of SEACOR Marine, and that shall extend to other companies, starting with BRAM Offshore Transportes Marítimos Ltda a subsidiary of Edison Chouest,
AGREES TO:
EXPRESS SOLIDARITY with the strike organised by SINDMAR, which has been force to take action du to the intransigency of some offshore companies. DEMAND that the Offshore companies in Brazil respect the Seafarers’ Rights and comply with fair conditions, in accordance with the industry of Brazil.
REJECT any attempt of the Judiciary that may attempt to restrict, avoid or eliminate the Right to Strike, as contemplated in the ILO Convention 98.
CONGRATULATE all Seafarers affiliated to SINDMAR for their total adhesion to the strike, and calls upon them to maintain that unity until fair and decent conditions on board are obtained.

Union takes sheriff to court over Longview tactics
The ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union) has filed a lawsuit against the sheriff of Cowlitz County, the City of Longview police chief, Cowlitz County and the City of Longview, USA. The suit alleges the use of disproportionate force against ILWU members demonstrating at the city’s new port grain terminal, whose owners have ignored the 80 year history of ILWU membership at the port and recruited non-ILWU members. Two weeks ago the union’s president, Bob McEllrath, was detained by police at a demonstration at the port. The ITF-affiliated ILWU has received ongoing international solidarity and backing from ITF unions around the globe. more >>
