German postal workers will from this month benefit from a minimum wage deal reached between a German ITF-affiliated union and an employers’ association representing postal delivery firms.
The agreement between Ver.di and the newly established postal sector employers’ organisation, Arbeitgeberverband Postdienste - which includes global delivery firms Deutsche Post/DHL, TNT and PIN - was reached last September. The deal provides some 220,000 workers with a minimum wage of 8 to 9.80 euros per hour. It was ratified by the government in December and workers were set to receive the minimum wage from the beginning of this month.
“The government’s agreement to apply minimum conditions legislation to the postal sector is a milestone for social progress. Now the agreed tariff for the minimum wage from 8 to 9.80 euros can be declared by the Labour Minister Olaf Scholz to be universally binding. This protects those employed in the liberalised postal sector from exploitation and tax payers from paying nonsensical social subsidies. The move shows that the political system is willing and able to put a stop to unfair working practices,” explained Ver.di representative Andrea Kocsis.
