The ITF is backing an initiative supported by global delivery firm TNT to tackle the issue of HIV/AIDS across the transport industry.
The ITF pledged its support to the North Star Foundation at a meeting on 24 January during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Established in 2006 by TNT, the United Nations World Food Programme and a number of other bodies concerned with transport workers’ health, the aim of the foundation is to set up a network of roadside “wellness” centres at major truck stops and border crossings in Africa, India and other Asian countries. The centres are designed to offer sexual health education, counselling, testing and treatment both to drivers and to the communities with which they interact, including sex workers.
During the meeting ITF General Secretary David Cockroft, who is among seven members of the foundation’s advisory panel, committed the federation’s support to develop communications strategies to raise awareness among drivers. He also offered the foundation use of the new drivers’ HIV/AIDS training toolkit, which was developed by the International Labour Organization, the ITF and the International Road Transport Union. In addition, he promised to provide assistance in working with local unions to identify and train peer educators for pilot projects in Kenya and other African countries.
Cockroft commented: “It is now well established that without the active involvement of transport workers and their unions, it is impossible to develop a viable response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. AIDS is a workplace issue and the key to tackling it is behavioural change. Transport workers respond best when the message is passed on by other workers, not handed down by employers or governments. That’s why the ITF is keen to provide whatever support it can to this important initiative.”
“We have high goals and ambitions for the North Star Foundation and teaming up with other partners in the HIV/AIDS and transport sector is essential to our success,” added Luke Disney, Co-director of the North Star Foundation.
