UPS freight workers set to join US union
18 July 2008
A hundred UPS workers in the US have signed up to become union members.
The workers, employed by UPS Freight terminals in Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada and Virginia, have signed authorisation cards to become Teamsters members, bringing the number of organised freight workers to nearly 11,200 since the middle of January. The figure edges ever closer to the Teamsters’ organising goal of 12,600 UPS Freight workers.
Teamsters Package Division Director Ken Hall said: “These workers deserve to be protected by a strong union that will make certain they have a secure future.”
“This victory has been a long time coming, and we are happy to be part of the largest organising campaign in the freight industry in decades,” said Teamsters Local 533 Secretary-Treasurer Mark Tracy.
In April, more than 89 per cent of UPS Freight workers who are already Teamster members ratified a new contract that provides workers with better wages, benefits and working conditions.
