US pilots rally against DHL plans to shift operations
4 July 2008
Pilots employed by a DHL contractor went on the picket line in the US last week in protest over plans to move operations to a rival firm.
Some 50 pilots, represented by the ITF-affiliated Air Line Pilots Association, picketed DHL’s North American headquarters on 26 June in Plantation, Florida, to express their anger over DHL’s proposed transfer of North American air cargo operations to UPS, one of the company’s main competitors. The company announced the plans at the end of May. The agreement with UPS would put Astar, whose main client is DHL, out of business and see more than 10,000 jobs axed.
The Astar pilots’ rally was supported by colleagues working at Spirit, Delta, Fedex and CCI; Astar management representatives, including chief counsel members also gave the pilots their backing.
