Temporary and casual employees working at European aviation hubs operated by a major global delivery firm are at risk of being exploited, aviation unions concluded last week.
The plight of temporary and casual workers at DHL was discussed at the DHL European aviation hubs network meeting, which took place in Brussels, Belgium from 18 – 19 September.
At the meeting, ITF-affiliated unions highlighted the range of problems experienced by temporary and casual workers employed in airports. These included reports of workers falling outside EU legislation ensuring they receive the same rights as permanent workers, receiving wages on an ad hoc basis and having to be available for work without being paid.
ITF Assistant Civil Aviation Secretary Liz Williamson commented: “Some of these workers come from as far away as Bangladesh and were unable to speak any other language except their own. These workers are extremely vulnerable to exploitation and as such are a potential safety and security risk.”
A recent ITF survey of airport hubs has revealed that temporary casual and agency workers comprise between 20 and 50 per cent of the total workforce of companies such as DHL.
