Transport unions need to build networks if they are to deal effectively with the challenges posed by the global delivery industry, concluded delegates at a recent seminar on logistics.

The seminar, which was organised by the ITF’s European arm, the ETF, and the European Trade Union Institute, took place from 9-11 March, in Florence, Italy. It aimed to evaluate and refocus trade union’s strategies for organising in the global delivery industry.

Among the union representatives’ key conclusions was that trade unions across and beyond Europe should network more closely to identify gaps in trade union structures. It was also suggested that cooperation with unions in the Baltic states needed to be stepped up. Networking, alongside other key initiatives, would be crucial to dealing with the main issues identified in the industry, such as an increasing number of temporary workers, an erosion of work-life balance rights, and outsourcing and social dumping.

Other recommendations put forward by participants included: establishing an ETF working group on sustainable developments in transport; providing unions with practical tools to facilitate networking and standardising job descriptions.
