5 December 2007
A US civil aviation union is fighting for a fair deal for workers at a contractor of one of the world’s largest global delivery firms.
The US ITF-affiliated Air Line Pilots’ Association (ALPA), which represents pilots working for Astar Air Cargo, one of DHL’s primary contractors, is currently in negotiations with management over a contract that expired in 2003; the previous contract had been negotiated between the union and DHL Airways, which was later renamed Astar Air Cargo.
The union is demanding: cost of living increases to cover the four year period since the contract’s expiry, including backdated pay; improved job security and benefits to help cover soaring medical insurance costs.
US law makes it difficult for airline workers to take strike action legally, so the union has launched a publicity campaign and organised demonstrations to press Astar Air Cargo and DHL on the issue. However, if no agreement can be reached, the union plans to make a request for permission to take strike action from the National Mediation Board early next year.
Patrick Walsh, Vice-Chairman of Astar ALPA's Master Executive Council, commented: “Ninety-seven per cent of our membership voted to authorise us to call a strike if we cannot reach a fair agreement. That is a tribute to our level of solidarity and indicative of the anger felt towards Astar Air Cargo and DHL. The companies are trying to circumvent job security commitments made in the last agreement and seeking concessions from pilots at a time when we have produced, and they have profited from, impeccable service supplied by our group.”
