29 February 2008

Global delivery workers in India have reached an agreement with DHL Express following more than a year of negotiations.

Workers in Chennai, represented by the DHL Worldwide Express India Private Limited Employees Union, and the company signed a new collective bargaining agreement on 24 January. The deal covers the period 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2009; workers’ previous agreement with DHL expired at the end of 2006.

Workers covered by the agreement, such as those engaged in pickup, deliveries, sorting, bagging, loading and unloading, data entry, retrieval and clearance – are to receive a number of benefits as a result. These include: a Rs1200 (US$30) monthly wage increase covering the entire period of the agreement; a Rs7500 (US$187) one-off goodwill gesture payment; an increase in reimbursements for workers’ children’s educational expenses and bonus payments. The agreement also outlines that pickup and delivery workers are to receive assistance in obtaining driving licences and appropriate training on driving a commercial vehicle.

The settlement follows years of turbulence between the union and the company – in 2006, the union’s General Secretary, Mahesh Mohan, was dismissed after months of victimisation. The matter of his reinstatement is yet to be resolved.

Mahendra Sharma, ITF Deputy Asia-Pacific Regional Secretary said: “Hopefully this new collective agreement, which was reached thanks to the tenacity of the trade union, will mark the start of a more positive relationship between the union and DHL. The employees are happy with the agreement.”
