Workers in Italy have won an agreement with DHL aviation that is set to improve safety at one of its aviation hubs.

The deal was reached earlier this month during a series of meetings between DHL and the ITF-affiliated Italian union Federazione Italiana Lavoratori Trasporti (FILT-CGIL), representing workers at the company’s Bergamo hub. It took strike action on 10 October to bring management to the negotiating table to discuss the union’s safety concerns.

The agreement will see the introduction of a number of steps, including the installation of video cameras inside the hub to help enhance security and safety and a pledge to contact the union in the event of an accident to examine ways of improving safety. The union believes that the agreement will spur negotiations on the wages of customs office employees, among the lowest paid workers in the hub.

Marco Sala of FILT-CGIL said: “The situation is much better now, but we still have to work on further negotiations to ensure that we reach positive agreements. What is clear is that DHL management is keen to work with us because it wants to avert any further strike action.”

The DHL European aviation hubs network is liaising with fellow affiliates and will continue to monitor the situation.
