Crewmembers of Astar Air Cargo, one of DHL’s main contractors in the US, have voted to ratify a contract agreed last month between the Air Line Pilots’ Association (ALPA) International, which represents them, and the company, following three years of negotiations.

The crewmembers, who operate from Wilmington, Ohio, voted overwhelmingly – 93 per cent – in favour of the agreement; almost 89 per cent of the 427 crew participated in the ballot. The agreement includes retroactive pay as well as a wage increase of over 20 per cent.

Negotiations began in January 2005; the National Mediation Board assisted with negotiations from April 2006.

“We had a tremendous turnout from our crewmembers and we would like to thank everyone that voted for making their voice heard,” said Captain Patrick Walsh, who became Chairman of the Astar Pilots’ Union on 1 March. “It was a lengthy, hard-fought negotiation, but with the commitment of our pilots and the support of ALPA International we achieved a solid result in a tough environment and moved our group forward.”
