Page context: Mobilising trade union action on gender equality > Background

Changes in transport have led to more women taking up jobs in the industry. However, the industry is unprepared to adjust to the specific needs of a growing female workforce. Working conditions, workplace culture and workplace ergonomics remain heavily male-centred.

To this extent, the ETF concern is that, while women do join the industry in greater numbers, there are no matching measures to make them stay on and build a career.

An equally serious concern is that the fast-growing number of women tends to be concentrated in precarious jobs (temporary or part-time contracts, low paid employment, etc.), which potentially limits their access to social security systems and benefits and impacts on the quality of their work and private life. This trend may occur in the emerging sectors and companies, which require higher workforce flexibility. Women also tend to be predominant in sectors that are prone to relocation and outsourcing (call centres, ticketing, etc.).
