Lorry Convoy crosses 6 countries, visits 5 cities and reaches Brussels on 28 April
15 April 2010
The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) will organise a lorry convoy to protest against the introduction, via a European law, of an 86-hour working week for some categories of professional drivers. With a starting point in the United Kingdom, 15 lorries and busses will cross the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France to finally enter the European quarter of Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday 28 April 2010. National actions will be organised in major cities of the crossed countries. Trade union activists from throughout Europe will join the convoy in Brussels.
The European Institutions are currently revising the European directive on working time for professional drivers. If adopted in its current form, the revised law will increase the working time for self-employed drivers from 48 to 86 hours per week. This proposal is now back on the table of the European Parliament, who rejected it several times before.
Convoy crosses 6 countries and ends its journey in European quarter of Brussels
Within several days, the convoy will cross 6 European countries to end its journey on 28 April at the Schuman roundabout in Brussels. On Friday 23 April a start-up action will be organised in London to address the danger of extensive working time for drivers. Between Monday 26 April and Wednesday 28 April, 15 lorries and busses will be welcomed by trade union activists and drivers in: The Hague (the Netherlands), Düsseldorf (Germany), Schengen (Luxembourg) and Paris (France).
ETF campaigns for safer roads and better jobs
The lorry convoy is the coping-stone of a one-year and a half ETF campaign to fight for the rejection of the European Commission proposal for the revision of the Working Time Directive for mobile personnel in road transport (Directive 2002/15/EC). The proposal intends to introduce an 86-hour working week for the self-employed professional drivers. The ETF campaign is one for safer roads for the European citizens and better jobs for the professional drivers.
