The ETF and its Unions March the Streets of Brussels

3 March 2009

The European Parliament takes the first step to reject the 84-86H work week for drivers!

On the morning of 2 March 2009, more than 500 transport workers from 10 European countries marched on the streets of Brussels to demonstrate against the possible introduction of an 84-86 hour work week for the road transport sector. Marching en masse to the European quarter, the 500+ union activists called upon the policy makers to speak out against further degradations to this profession that would infringe upon road safety.

The afternoon of the same day, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament voted to reject the 84 – 86 hour work week! The ETF welcomes this vote as an important step in what remains a tough battle.

The ETF credits its success to both its affiliates who came out in large numbers to protest against the proposed legislation, and to the Members of the European Parliament who stood up for workers’ rights by voting for better quality of jobs in this sector and better safety on European roads. Without their help, this victory would not have been possible. The ETF also appreciates the help and support of ETUC, a valued partner in the fight for workers’ rights.

The European Parliament will meet again in the upcoming months – in Plenary - to decide the fate of this dossier. The ETF encourages the Members of the European Parliament to confirm in Plenary the vote of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs!
