Rail workers to march in Paris on Thursday against EU plans
7 November 2008
Thousands of rail workers from across Europe will march in Paris on 13 November 2008 as part of a demonstration called by the European Transport Workers’ Federation against EU plans that could lead to the complete fragmentation of the continent’s national rail networks.
The demonstrators will gather from 11.00 at Place de la Bastille then march to Montparnasse at 13:30. The demonstration will finish around 17:00.
On the same day an ETF delegation will also meet Dominique Busserau, Secretary of State in charge of transport, who is representing the French Presidency of the Transport Council of Ministers.
The workers will march to say ‘enough is enough!’, with the following messages:
To the EC, European Parliament and Council: no further liberalisation and fragmentation of the railways.
To national governments: develop the railways, invest in railway infrastructure and public services; say yes to the polluter pays principle in road transport (and all transport modes). To employers and their organisations: no more flexibility; no more job cut. For good working conditions and pay.
This press release is to give you advance notice of the demonstration. More details, including background and quotes, will follow in a press release on 12 November 2008.
