ETF welcomes ILO Convention for Fisheries

14 June 2007

The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) warmly welcomes the ILO Convention for Fisheries known as The Work in Fishing Convention (n°188), for which trade unions worldwide have battled for long.

The Convention - adopted today by 437 votes, two against and 22 abstentions - enshrines a comprehensive set of international minimum standards for all fishermen, included those working on an artisanal basis or on small-scale vessels.

Speaking from the vote in Geneva, Fisheries Section Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation Jon Whitlow commented: “Two years ago the ILO Fisheries Convention failed to be adopted on a technicality, being one vote short of the quorum. Since then we’ve redoubled our efforts to get the protection for fishing crews through social dialogue with responsible employers and concerned governments”.

“This vote is a major step towards gaining decent work for fishers and setting an international minimum standard for the sector. It should also provide a tool to curb illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and prevent some of the worst abuses that we know take place within this sector”, he continued.

To come into effect, the Convention now requires ratification by ten (including eight coastal nations) of the ILO’s 180 Members States. By doing so, they will also be asked to report back on the implementation status of these norms.

“The ETF urges all EU Member States to take the necessary steps for the ratification of the text. Having it incorporated into national legislation will speed up its entry into force on a global scale”, said ETF General Secretary Eduardo Chagas.
